class date: 04/01/2025

After observing dataset of India, I can say that there are multiple levels of data which makes the data complex.

My primary question as of now is to know whether the protest organizers and ruling party of that state has any correlation, which can be done by adding a new attribute and name the ruling party by finding the name using date and state name.

class date: 03/18/2025

we got introduced to new data and some of the questions i came up with are:

  • How many protest events occurred in different regions of India over time?

  • What are the most common types of demonstrations (e.g., peaceful protests vs. violent protests)?

  • What is the distribution of protest sizes (small, large, no report)?

  • Which states or districts in India report the highest number of protests?

  • Are protests concentrated in urban areas or rural areas based on location data?

  • How often do protests lead to fatalities or violent escalations?

  • Are larger protests more likely to result in policy changes or government responses?

Report time

class date: 02/25/2025

Today in the class, we get to see a report on gender despairity by a fellow student. Its a well prepared report but I believe it lacks reasons. As the deadline approaches for report submission, I am half way through it and should collect some feedback from fellow students to make it better.

Some Analysis

class date: 02/04/2025

Today, in the class professor showed us a report of his own displaying the number of shootings by police stations, that led me to an objective.

I wanted to understand the relationship between body camera usage and the race of the victim in fatal police shootings. So first I divided race of the individuals killed by a specific police stations, which looks like..

Agency Name White Black Hispanic Other/Unknown
Los Angeles Police Department 54 36 43 15
Phoenix Police Department 48 29 38 11
Houston Police Department 39 33 23 6

Then further categorized to know how many of the fatal shootings involved officers with body cameras turned ON and OFF for each racial group.

Agency name Race Bodycam ON Bodycam OFF Unkown
Los Angeles Police Department white 22 19 13
black 10 13 13
hispanic 16 15 12
Phoenix Police Department white 15 22 11
black 8 13 8
hispanic 9 20 9

ps: I was hoping to find some patterns, but it doesn’t look like there are any major ones.

Crafting Meaningful Questions

Class date: 01/28/2025

In today’s class, everyone expressed their ideas for objective.

Some of the questions I thought of, are

  • How has the racial distribution of shooting victims changed over time?
  • How many people were armed or unarmed in a given state or county, and which state or county had the most armed or unarmed individuals ?
  • Which state or county has the fewest body cams turned on?
  • How does the list of shootings in the U.S. compare to that of another country?

Familiarizing with Dataset

Class date: 01/21/2025

We got introduced to dataset of fatal police shootings from Washington post. And the objective of the class is to make meaningful analysis to find answers for questions we make up.

As per the objective the first step is to ask proper questions for the data given. A glimpse at data is enough to understand there are many questions that can be taken from it, but can they all be meaningful? no.

So, i dive into this week thinking of all the possible questions and select some good ones to move to second step.
